How Do Flower Essences Work?

Bach's Calico Flower-2In order to understand how Flower Essences work, we must recognize that humans and animals are more than physical bodies.  Everything is made of energy.  While it is all the same energy, everything (including people, animals, plants, flowers, and gems) has its unique vibrational pattern and gives off its own distinctive resonance.  Each element on the Elemental Table has a unique atomic structure and vibration due to the energy created from the units of the atoms comprising the element.  Each combination of elements also has a unique structure or energy imprint.

We have an electrical or energy system within and around our bodies.  We experience health and balance when there are no breaks in the energy’s pathways.  Whenever there is an imbalance in the body – mind – spirit connection, there exists the potential for illness or disease in the body.  The body systems then join together in an attempt to fight the disharmony and restore balance.  When we are stressed, our energy circuits or pathways can get overloaded or short-circuit just as the electrical system of a building.  This then creates physical symptoms such as headaches, intestinal problems, cramps, and assorted aches and pains.  Symptoms can also be mental or emotional:  depression, confusion, dissatisfaction with life, etc.

Flower Essences can help to reconnect or repair the broken circuitry and address the causes of the symptoms not just the symptoms.  Flower Essences are non-invasive and subtle yet very powerful.  Thoughts, feelings, and experiences are entwined with the physical body.  Modern physics has known about and studied the connectedness of matter and consciousness for almost a century, while medical science still operates on the premise of the body being a mechanism in a world of machines.  Research regarding the impact of consciousness on health is providing amazing insight.

What Are Flower Essences?

Flower Essences are vibrational, or energetic, and are part of subtle energy medicine as are homeopathy, color therapy, acupuncture, therapeutic touch, and many others.  Flower Essences are liquid infusions made from flowers and address our emotional well-being as well as body-mind health.  Each flower essence uniquely interacts with the mental and emotional bodies to help restore balance and this can, then, lead to balance of the body – mind – spirit and help eliminate the stress which can lead to illness and disease.  As the essences have a vibrational frequency, the aspect of one’s being that is in disharmony is drawn like a magnet to the healing frequency of the flower.

Flower essences are chosen based on the positive qualities one desires rather than the negative conditions one wishes to change.  Flower Essences are not to be confused with aromatherapy – Flower Essences have no aroma.  Essential oils work through our sense of smell and its effect on the brain.  They are highly concentrated and often poisonous when ingested.  Flower essences interact with one’s being through their vibrational essence.  They are safe and gentle for topical or internal application.

History of Flower Essences

Flowers have been used worldwide for thousands of years as an instrument of healing.  They not only enhance earth’s beauty, but also our well-being.  It is said that Ancient Egyptians perfected the practice of aromatherapy.  It is not surprising that they were familiar with the healing properties of flowers.  Dew from flowers was collected and exposed to sunlight to increase the potency of the preparation.  Australian Aborigines utilize flower essences in their culture as well through collecting dew from flowers at sunrise.  They believed their emotional well-being was enhanced.

In Crete, the Minoans would place flowers in bowls of water and sip the water or eat the petals to aid in cleansing their body, mind, and spirit.  Similar essences have also been used in China and India for their healing properties.

Dr. Edward Bach, a well-known homeopathic physician in England, developed our modern form of Flower Essences in the 1930s.  Dr. Bach believed each flower had its own unique personality and that they could correspond to our characteristics as well.  He discovered flower essences could stimulate conscious choices and awareness by introducing the positive archetypes of the flowers.

How Are Flower Essences Prepared?

“Flower Essences are dilute, potentized herbal infusions or decoctions, prepared from wildflowers or pristine garden blossoms.  They are made directly in the ‘laboratory of nature,’ where the four alchemical elements of earth, wat, air and fire are found in harmonious balance.  To this is added the fifth ‘quintessential’ element of the sensitive awareness and attunement of the preparer.  The fresh, dew-filled blossoms are gathered in the early morning of a clear, sunny day.  Floating on the surface of a bowl of water, they are irradiated by the warmth and light of the sun for several hours.  This process creates an energetic imprint of the ehteric energy pattern of the flower in the water, embodying the healing archetype of that plant.  This ‘mother essence’ is preserved with brandy and then further diluted and potentized to for the ‘stock’ which is sold in stores and to practitioners.”  (Flower Essence Services, 2000)

Are Flower Essences Compatible with Other Medical Treatment?

Flower Essences are made only from the vibrational imprint of a plant’s flower and they impact our body through mind and spirit changes and have no direct impact on the body’s biochemistry as do many pharmaceutical and psychoactive drugs.  They compliment and support other forms of medical treatment including prescribed medication.  Flower Essences are most effective when used in conjunction with counseling.

Flower Essences treat the whole person and are used to support the healing of specific symptoms.  Flower Essences have no know negative side effects.  They are safe for adults, children, pets, and other animals.  As they are primarily vibrational in nature, there is no such thing as an overdose with Flower Essences.
