Dream Walking — Take Baby Steps
I’m working my way through Jennifer Boykin’s 21 Days – Reclaim the Sass (free ebook at her website). I must admit, it’s taking longer than 21 days as some days I forget to look at it and I don’t like cramming several days in to get caught up. Jennifer’s bog is Life After Tampons, but so much of what she says can be applied to adults of any age (women or men). I’m on Day 5 and she talks about coming to terms with your body the way it is today and accepting it. Not that we have to own this look forever, just that it is what it is TODAY. The action step for today is to go through my closet and get rid of what doesn’t fit (for most of us, this means things that are too small). I’ve done that a couple of times in the past year as I’ve returned to what was my typical weight for many years (most definitely not my ideal weight).
I know I have an issue with cortisol and gain weight when I’m under a lot of stress regardless of how careful I am with my calorie intake and diet. I also have a more sedentary job than I had when I was closer to my ideal weight. But back to the issue of closet cleaning … I really like some of those smaller clothes and am still hanging on to them. I don’t have a lot of clothes, never have, and it’s sometimes difficult to find things I really like. Yet I think Jennifer has a point in that whenever I step into the closet and see the section I’m waiting to wear, it’s just another “jab” that I’m not what I think I should be.
Maybe it’s time to not only clean out the closet but start thinking about all the things my inner chatter says I should be and yet, I am not. We often times belittle ourselves for not accomplishing more but what good does this really do for us? Wouldn’t it be more productive to dream a little about what we do want to accomplish and figure out a few steps to take to get there rather than harboring (sitting on) what we could have, should have done already?
We can’t change the past, but we can certainly change today which changes tomorrow. I know you have a dream. Oh, it may be a while since you’ve dreamed that dream, but it’s there. How about brushing aside some of the cobwebs along the passageway of that dream and opening the doors to let a little light shine on it. Take some time to think about just one or two steps that you could take to bring that dream closer to becoming reality.
They don’t have to be big, giant steps … baby steps are good. Maybe you make a call to someone or send an email to get more information. Maybe you find a free ebook or Kindle book or online class that will help you be more prepared. Maybe you just do some online research. The beginning parts of your dreams don’t have to cost you anything.
One of my dreams is to write a book and I was recently invited by an acquaintance to start attending a gathering of women who meet every couple of weeks for a potluck dinner and writer’s workshop. Normally, I would have passed on this opportunity so I could have that time with family. But it’s time for me to re-kindle the flames of my dreams and have made a commitment to attend. How do I show others dreams come true if mine don’t? This isn’t a big step, but it is a step.
How about you? Which dream of yours has been buried for too long? What step can you take to bring it closer to reality?
