Can Reiki Help with PTSD Symptoms?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious condition which occurs after a traumatic incident. While it is most commonly associated with military combat, other types of trauma can trigger this condition (examples:  rape, abuse, and domestic violence).  This article will briefly discuss why PTSD occurs and how Reiki can help.

Experiencing a serious trauma can trigger PTSD as the brain struggles to make sense of the event. PTSD can often result in re-experiencing the event, many times with vivid imagery or nightmares. Additionally, someone experiencing PTSD may become hyper-alert.  Being constantly on the lookout for danger can result in difficulties sleeping and focusing.  Some other common symptoms are avoiding reminders of the event and feeling emotionally numb. Over time, these symptoms can cause other mental health issues such as depression or anxiety.  How does Reiki help with this condition or its symptoms?

Reiki is based on the premise that we all have a life force within us, and when that force is low, we are more likely to get sick or be more susceptible to stressful events in our lives.  During a Reiki session, the client often becomes very relaxed which allows the flow of this energy to better move through the meridians (energy channels) and helps to balance the flow of energy throughout the body.  The effects produced are often like that of meditation.  Studies indicate massage may be a good way of helping people with PTSD.  For some, however, this level of physical touching may bring painful reminders of the traumatic event. Reiki offers the same relaxing effect as a massage while the client remains fully clothed (less shoes for comfort).  Additionally, Reiki is incredibly safe, as it requires no medications or invasive procedures.  Let’s look how a Reiki session might impact something experiencing PTSD.

Reiki treatments can lower cortisol which, in turn, reduces stress levels.  For many with PTSD, constantly reliving the situation increases their stress to levels far above that of the average person. Lowering stress, through Reiki, can help those with PTSD regain control of their lives. Another benefit of Reiki is a lowering of anxiety levels.  A common symptom of PTSD is to be constantly on the lookout for danger.  This hyper-alertness increases anxiety levels. Reducing anxiety can help allow the mind to relax enough for healing to begin.  For many, Reiki can help control feelings of depression. Immediately after a traumatic incident, many people experience feelings of depression.  If left untreated, this can develop into physical self-harming or even suicidal ideologies.  Reiki can help alleviate depression and allow the client to create a more positive mindset. It is for these reasons that Reiki is increasingly recommended for treatment with PTSD.
