    Morning Solace

What a treat.  It’s not early, but I’m a morning person with a house full of night owls.  It’s the weekend – no work – so I basically have the house to myself while the others remain in peaceful slumber.  The neighborhood still sleeps as well.  Cars are sitting in driveways.  Doors and windows still closed … except for mine.  The blinds are open and the morning light filters in.  The patio door lets in fresh air as well as the singing of the birds and the hooting of an owl.  My servants – dishwasher and washing machine – are faithfully at work so I can enjoy this bit of…

    Security of Consistency

As I sit and watch the fire in my fireplace after Christmas Eve dinner, I wonder what the new year will bring.  I think of my Grandma Niss – we just had her Tator Tot Casserole for dinner.  I think of my mom – I have her Cranberry Relish in the fridge for tomorrow’s dinner.  And I think of my Grandma Conro – I’m planning Cinnamon Rolls for breakfast (not from scratch like Grandma made, but Pillsbury does a pretty good job). My family … the kids, my granddaughter, and me … we don’t have much tradition right now.  Maybe that’s what is missing for me.  With tradition comes a…

    If We Are Patient

I’ve waited for things before but guess I never thought about how the Law of Attraction works with it.  My family recently decided to undertake a small construction project to repair a shed and do some work in the garage.  I belong to the local FreeCycle group and posted a request for the items I would need.  I’ve used the list before, but mostly I list things I’m giving rather than things I’m needing.  Lots of folks are looking for construction materials so I wasn’t sure anything would materialize.  Imagine my excitement when I received an email that someone had some things and also had a dumpster sitting at their…

To Jump or Not to Jump … I Jump

Growing up doesn’t have to get boring or be uber-serious.  I wish someone would have told me this a long time ago instead of leading me to believe that growing up meant taking life seriously (very seriously) and taking the “fun” out of it. Now, I’ll grant that there are times and places for fun and being silly and the “board room” isn’t likely one of them (though there may be some instances in some board rooms).  But why do we teach kids to stop jumping on the bed?  The most obvious reason is the potential danger and/or property damage … falling off the bed, hitting your head on the…

    When the Temperature Rises

The thermostat for my A/C didn’t seem to be running right the past few days.  I thought about just changing the batteries but decided a programmable one would be a good idea.  I looked up how to change one online and it didn’t look too complicated.  I grew up in the home of a contractor and regularly went to jobs with my dad.  I’ve also watched hours and hours of HGTV/DIY type shows.  I’ve undertaken a lot of minor home improvement projects in the past but for a couple of years, I’ve been afraid to try anything.  Nothing bad ever happened and my projects aways turned out great … just…

    Don’t Drown Your Rescuer

I meet twice a month with a small group of ladies and we eat and write.  Oh, there’s a lot more to it than that, but I’ll cover at a later time.  At our last meeting, it was suggested that we select a word for the week and keep a log of when the word is brought to mind — through conversation, thoughts, other visuals, etc — to help us be aware of what is around us. Although I haven’t yet decided on my word for the week, I had previously selected a word for the year which was “change”. Boy, let me tell you … that might not have been the…
